Marinnie Sanders: Finding Strength and Stability Through Beyond Jobs
Marinnie Sanders felt at her lowest point when everything seemed to be going wrong at once. She lost her job, her home, and not long after, suffered a car accident that left her needing emergency surgery.
“I was upset and angry at everything,” Marinnie said. “I didn't have no car, no job, no money. I didn’t know what I was going to do.”
When Marinnie came across a sign for Beyond Jobs, our workforce development program that provides employment services and supportive resources, she initially felt skeptical. Being in her 50s, Marinnie felt the societal pressure to have it all together on her own and was nervous about seeking outside help. Putting aside her uncertainty, Marinnie decided to pick up the phone and call Mission: St. Louis, a decision that would become the first step in bringing some stability into her life.
Reflecting on her first experiences with Beyond Jobs, Marinnie fondly remembers how her success coach, Lesley, had her back from the very first class, offering comfort when she felt emotional sharing her story. Lesley, in turn, describes Marinnie as someone who stood out right away- kind-hearted and determined.
“From day one, she let us know she was different, didn’t take no for an answer and would be back as often as she can,” Lesley said. “That was a few years ago and she has kept her word.”
During her time as a participant of Beyond Jobs, Marinnie was provided with invaluable resources and opportunities. Having never owned a computer before, she received her first one and learned how to use it. Marinnie also utilized skills from the Beyond Jobs classes to create a resume, leading to several interviews and ultimately, a job with Special School District. She also achieved important milestones through the program including opening a bank account for the first time- a step that made her feel more secure and confident.
Marinnie’s coaches explain that she has a willingness to help others which has made a lasting impact on those around her. Early on, she quickly became known for her kindness and dedication, something that was exemplified on the first day of class.
“During her first class, she connected two ladies to jobs via word of mouth with a school district,” Lesley said.
After graduating from Beyond Jobs, Marinnie has maintained her connection to Mission: St. Louis by attending events and making her presence known. She attended the Affordable Christmas event and was able to buy toys for her grandchildren at a reduced cost. Marinnie also felt supported during a time when she fell behind on rent and was provided with the resources she needed to get back on her feet.
Beyond the practical support, Marinnie has developed lasting relationships with the team, making jokes and bringing smiles to the Mission: St. Louis staff. Marinnie describes how she feels particularly connected with Lesley, who continues to reach out and ask Marinnie if she needs help with anything. Just this past September, Marinnie held a 60th birthday party which Lesley attended as well. Marinnie explains how she feels confident and a stronger sense of self. For her, Mission: St. Louis has become a judgement-free, safe space.
“They didn't ask me how I got like that,” Marinnie said. “They never said you need to do better. They didn't judge me.”
Marinnie explains that she has learned to keep striving, even when she is knocked down. For Marinnie, Beyond Jobs arrived at a time when she felt hopeless, but she gained lifelong connections and support.
“Every time I feel like I'm not going to make it, I remember the classes,” Marinnie said. “I took notes, and I sometimes read them to remind myself to be positive, be self-confident, love yourself, and stay motivated.”
